Our Home Movie Theater System

It all started about nine months ago, when my wife and I decided it would be a good idea to modernize our home. It took a lot of talking about because neither of us genuinely wanted to take the job on as we both have active business lives. However, one Sunday afternoon, I took the bull by the horns and started to strip the paper off the walls and the ceiling in the kitchen. My wife soon joined in.

It took us a month to finish it, because we only had Saturday afternoons and Sunday, but we found that we enjoyed the physical work, we both have desk jobs, and we really enjoyed working and planning together. It was a new but pleasing experience for us.

So, on the day we finished, we prepared a special meal and laid the table by the book. After the meal, we sat down to watch a film on TV. But neither of us had been able to do that for a month and we both felt restless. My wife said something like: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have another project to do?’ and I reckon we both had the same idea at the same time.

The spare bedroom! Well, our kids had families of their own now, so we actually had three spare bedrooms. We decided to turn one of them into a home theater. Neither of us particularly liked watching TV, but we both liked films which are normally ruined by too much advertising.

We went up to the smallest room, but it was too small so, like Goldilocks we went to the next, but ended up in the biggest room, so that we could entertain friends or family too. Neither of knew what to do next about the home movie centre, but we knew that we could clear the room out and measure it, which is what we did. All the furniture went into the garage until the charity shop could take it away and we went to the computer to get assistance.

There was tons of advice on websites and in articles and we soon felt confident enough to take the venture on. We transferred the dimensions of the room in scale onto a sheet of paper and drew in where the screen would go and where we would be sitting. The distance left between us and the screen would be about 15 feet.

We had read that the best viewing distance is between three times and five times the diameter of the screen, so we could choose a screen between sixty inches and 36 inches. Being in our fifties, we though we would make it easier on our eyes and opted for a forty-eight inch plasma screen.

We ordered that from the Internet. We had also read that the Xbox was a good double as a DVD player and we knew that our grandson was always on about one, so that was next. We were a bit stuck with the speakers, but my brother could help me on that one. We had about a week before our equipment would arrive, so we determined to redecorate in the evenings.

Once complete, we installed all our equipment with my brother’s help and we were off. At first we used a couple of sun loungers as seating, but we fairly soon got two delightfully comfortable reclining chairs and two couches for visitors. We may upgrade those later and put in dimmable lighting too, but for now we are very pleased with our home movie system and so is our grandson.

With everyone living in a busy world we all are looking for ways to save time, renting dvd’s on the web can be huge time saver and not only time, but renting movies on the web also saves money, so today you should only rent dvd’s online and save yourself time and money if you are renting on a monthly basis.

Online sites offer you everything from price, customer service, location, fast delivery, and much more. Many individuals prefer to become a paid member of such sites and enjoy their favorite films.

Individuals rent dvd’s for many different reasons. Most of us visit popular departments at your local video rental store or the new movie releases area to find the most current films available. It’s a good way to catch up on all the movies you missed in the theater.

Not only that but it is also one of the best ways to save money. Before going to a movie at the movie theaters, a lot of people decide to wait for it to come out on dvd. Many films are ready to be rented within months of their theatrical debut.

A lot of individuals rent titles to preview them before adding them to their DVD collections. While the cost of dvd’s has gone down in the last couple of years, a lot of people still do not want to add a movie to their compilation until they know that they will enjoy the dvd and will watch it at least a few more times. A movie rental club is often the perfect choice for movie fans. Commonly these membership clubs offer incentives for individuals who rent dvd’s a few times a month.

If you’re a big cinema fan , or you just rent dvd’s every now and again, there are many excellent video stores and sites devoted to renting you movies. Your local video store is an excellent option for last minute movie rentals. The web services are also a great way of renting without the hassles of traveling to the store. They also have rather competitive prices if you are renting more than a few times each month.

The main issue with internet rental clubs is if you are looking to watch the movie tonight, you better find other plans because the video won’t be there. You will need to wait for the dvd’s to be delivered. Although this is a pretty good way to rent movies, there is an easier way to view movies when you decide to watch them.

You should join a legal online movie download website, you can view movies when ever you want to watch them, not when they eventually get delivered to your mailbox.

To summarize. if you are a movie buff like I am, then you want to view the movies when you want to watch them, and you just can’t do that with the internet dvd rental systems. You can, on the other hand, watch them whenever you want, when you have the opportunity to download the movies on to your computer.

I have also found legal software programs that will let you to transfer the movies on to your own disc, if your computer has a dvd burner.

The Basics Of Home Theater Speakers

The second most essential part of a good home theater set-up is its loudspeakers. You simply cannot attain that authentic theater environment, if you do not have good speakers. It goes without saying too, that the amplifier and player must be equally as good, because any system is only as good as its weakest element.

However, if you do it right, you can easily reproduce the sound quality achieved in a full size movie theater. Unfortunately though, many people seem to get baffled about which speakers they need, when they go to buy for their home theater in order to create real surround sound.

The minimum requirements for a good set of surround sound speakers are a left and right channel speaker, a centre channel speaker and a sub-woofer. The following are the basic speakers that are necessary to make up a good home theater: front left and right speakers, a centre channel speaker, surround sound speakers. Often people try to do without the centre channel speaker, but this speaker provides a good proportion of the soundtrack in a lot of movies as well as adding depth to the dialogue.

The surround sound makes the film seem more realistic. It is what makes the difference between watching TV at home and going to the movie theater. The option of having this at home has only recently become affordable. The most common systems are: 5.1 channel, 6.1 channel, or 7.1 channel surround sound. The first digit refers to the number of normal loud speakers and the second one to the number of sub-woofers. The amount of speakers that is the best for you, depends on the size and shape of the room you are sitting in. The more is not always the merrier.

The sub-woofer is the cause of the deep bass sound that underscores so many movie soundtracks and these are the sounds that are responsible for heightening the drama in a film. A good sub-woofer is an vital part of your home theater speaker package, if you do not have one, you will miss out on this.

There are many brands on the market and some are cheaper than others, but it is important that you choose speakers that will work well together. They have to be compatible. If you do not know how to make sure that they are, the best choice for this is to purchase all your speakers together in one kit by one maker. It may be tempting to save money by mixing and trying to match speakers, but if you get it wrong, you will not create the true quality of sound you are hoping to achieve in your home theater.

Some speakers are made to place on the floor and others are made to hang on the wall. Floor standing speakers are the best for home theater, but they also take up the most room and can have wires running everywhere. If this is not a problem to you, then fine, but if it is, you can solve it by getting wireless speakers.

Speakers And Home Theater

When most people are looking for a sound system, they usually go straight to the speakers. This is not necessarily wrong, but you must not end there. The speakers are an important part of a sound system, but they are not the be all and end all.

It also essential to think about the player and the amplifier, because any sound system is only as good as its weakest constituent. Another important topic is the placement of those speakers. It is just as important to locate your speakers correctly as it is not to buy cheap speakers. There are also misconceptions about size. Bigger is not always better.

In the past, it was often the rule that bigger meant better, but now often the reverse is often the case. Technological advancement has been concentrated on producing smaller speakers, that will take up less space in our smaller houses and smaller cars. Therefore, the smaller speakers are often the most technologically advanced.

If you are opting for surround sound, which is the best available today, then you will also have to think carefully about placement. That is the positioning of the speakers. In a typical 5.1 surround sound home theater, you will have six speakers: five ordinary speakers and one sub-woofer.

These speakers would be set out one to the far right of the screen and one to the far left of it and one underneath it. The other two speakers would be at the rear of the audience, but not so far apart as the front speakers. The sub-woofer can go in the centre at the front or the rear.

For smaller rooms, a 3.1 surround sound system might be sufficient, that is you leave out the rear speakers. For a larger room, you may want either a 6.1 or 7.1 system. The 6.1 has the rear row of speakers matching the front row, while the 7.1 has an extra middle rear speaker.

It is better if you can buy all your speakers at the same time from the same manufacturer. Obviously, they all have to match each other and the amplifier. The output from the amplifier has to match the capabilities of the speakers or you risk blowing them. That is, sending them more power than they can cope with, which causes too much vibration and permanent damage to the speaker’s internal components. Everyone has heard blown speakers, they sound awful.

If you can not afford to get all your speakers at the same time, buy a famous brand and a late-ish model, so that you can get more of them when you can afford to. Do not go for end of line speakers, because they are cheap, unless you can buy all the speakers that you will ever require for your set-up.

Buy your speakers online, if that gets you the best deal, but you really ought to hear speakers like the ones you are buying in action, before you make up your mind. You could also take your Internet price to the local dealers and ask them to match it. They might, you never know and it will save you carriage too.

How To Install A Home Theater Set-up

It is sure that the most important matter in setting up a home theater set-up is the size of the room where you will set up the home theater system. Therefore, the size of the most important component of a home theater set-up, which is the television, is also reliant on the size of the room. Regardless of the size of the room, the minimum suggested size of the screen is 28 inches.

A flat screen television is also suggested, because it will cut down on reflections and glare. Speakers are also dependent on the size of the room. Clearly, you would require more speakers in a very large room than in a small one.

You might want to put a lot of small speakers in a large room or one large speaker in a small room. The acoustics of the room is an important factor in this. Therefore, I recommend that you either get an expert in or get a wireless sound system that can be built upon.

The average number of speakers in a starter set-up in an average sized room would be five or six. The more speakers you use, up to a point, the greater the reality, but lots of speakers also means that you do not need thunderous volume too. There are many considerations when it comes to the sound – far more than with the screen.

You will want surround sound, with woofers, sub woofers, treble and bass speakers all with the Dolby control set-up, probably all controlled by a graphic equalizer. All these controls can be confusing, but once you have the sound right, you will know it. It will sound like a full-sized movie theater.

Another important component of your home theater set-up is the DVD player. Your DVD player really must have a progressive scan. This is because a progressive scan produces sharp and flicker-free pictures. However, the progressive scan facility depends on the television unit, because not all television sets support progressive scan signals.

An optional upgrade might be a five-disk carousel DVD player. All of these things also depend on the amount of money you have, of course. However, if money is tight, begin with the best DVD player you can afford and use a few old speakers and the biggest television set you can get hold of. Later, you can upgrade the television or the speakers.

The furniture is crucial too. You have to feel as if you are undergoing a special experience. The goal is to have reclining chairs, but you can start with large bean bags. Add air conditioning and a fridge for cold drinks and a few tables for nuts and candy and you are almost there.

My concluding touches would be old movie posters, photos of movie stars, a collection of autographs would be great, a replica Oscar and any other memorabilia you can think of. Then set all this off with some subtle lighting that you can raise or dim as required.

Sound, camera, action!

Halo 3: Bring It On!

Recently while searching the Internet for details on the Halo 3 weapons cheats, I came across a number of what-if scenarios? What if Master Chief took on different famous characters from movies, comic books, and legends? Here is a list of some of these battles and my take on the outcome.

While technically not a Halo 3 weapon cheat, the match-up of Master Chief versus Robocop could be a good one. According to the information on the Internet both have a few similarities. They’re both human, they’ve both been improved on, they both have amazing armour and they are both veteran combatants. Most respondents thought that Master Chief would defeat Robocop, but let’s face facts, Master Chief can be defeated with a hand-gun, whereas Robocop was still going after being blown up at a gas station. The nod has to go to Robocop.

If Master Chief took on the next fighter he would do well to have a Halo 3 weapon cheat. The next is MacGyver. Master Chief has a lot going for him. He is an expert with a number of weapons; he has that fantastic armour; he has some marvellous vehicles at his disposal; he’s a Clint Eastwood type loner and he can regenerate himself. However, in short, MacGyver is brain over brawn. It would probably boil down to the same considerations in a fight between Batman and Superman. However, if it’s a closed arena where it’s man versus man, Master Chief will win. But put this contest in the real world with Swiss army knives and plastic tape at his disposal, and MacGyver’s going to wipe the floor with our futuristic friend.

So far Master Chief is 2-0 down, it’s starting to look like he could really use a Halo 3 weapon cheat. But we’ll give him another chance. This time it’s Master Chief versus Terminator. We already know Master Chief’s powers, the Terminator’s consist of an ability to master any weapon, relentless willpower, indefatigability, amazing detrermination to kill his prey. It all comes down to the Spartan laser weapon. As one respondent said, if Master Chief can destroy vehicles with this weapon he can certainly put a sizeable hole in the Terminator too.

Let’s have one more contest before Master Chief finds his Halo 3 weapon cheat. What can he do against Boba Fett from Star Wars? The only differences between Master Chief and Boba Fett are that Boba has no shields, owns his own ship and has a jet pack.

Many people believe Star Wars would come out on top in this battle, but Master Chief’s weapons are much more powerful than those shown by the bounty hunter. This one makes it evens at 2-2.

So, those are the results of the survey – the people have spoken. In this tiny poll that we found on the Internet, Master Chief is your average sort of super hero, who is not sure to win every single fight, unless he finds his weapon cheats or the story writers want him to, that is.

Halo 3: Screenshots

When a video game series is as widely popular as the Halo set is (which includes Halo 3, of course) then it’s bound to result in there being many screenshots takes. This article concentrates on some of the weird and wonderful Halo 3 screenshots.

Before we get on to the Halo 3 screenshots specifically, let’s have a look at the numbers that create all of this media. Over 9 million copies of Halo 3 have been sold so far. That means that if every person who bought the game plays for only 10 hours, there are more than 90 million hours of game time from which to make screenshots. A lot can happen in 90 million hours, and with all the image-uploading websites available to people, a lot of it has been documented.

One of the issues in Halo 3 that has often been documented in Halo 3 screenshots is what Master Chief looks like or more specifically, what his face is like. If you use a search engine to look up the top 10 Halo 3 screenshots, you’ll find a picture of Master Chief lying dead on the ground, clearly not revealing a face inside his helmet. This explains why we never see his face, say many people, because he does not really have one.

Another one of the top Halo 3 screenshots featuring in the 10 most popular Halo 3 screenshots is the one of a Marine getting hammered on a floodgate. Someone said that it looked a lot like Han Solo when he was frozen in Carbonite. And do you know what? – they’re totally right.

The makers of Halo 3 decided to make it a lot simpler for players to grab Halo 3 screenshots and to share them on the Internet. In order to accomplish this, they created a ‘Saved Films’ feature in the video game. This feature allows players to slow down the action, or even to freeze it, change the camera angles and even move the camera around to get exactly the screenshot they would like to see. Generally speaking, the ‘Save Films’ feature records all the action that occurs in the game, so it can later be turned into videos are screenshots.

Another feature that has a lot to do with Halo 3 screenshots in the ‘Save Films’ feature, is the viewing of previously saved films. You see, the saves are not just images or video, they’re actual game data. This means two things: 1] the file size is very small and 2] the whole game can be watched from different angles on the Xbox 360.

That means that a person could watch a game again and again, finding new things in new places every time they replay it. That’s a lot better than simple Halo 3 screenshots.

When Was Halo 3 Released?

On May 15, 2007 the information was published, that Halo 3 was due to be released on September 25 in North America and on the 26th in Europe. Halo 3 marked the third in a wildly popular series for the Xbox 360 called ‘Halo’. According to the vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, Halo 3′s release was much more than only a video game release, it was to be the biggest entertainment event of the year. He may just have been right too.

The history of Halo 3 really starts with the release of the first game in the series ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’. In November, 2001, when Halo was first published, game consoles were something of a joke for one person shooter games. Yes, some games existed, but they didn’t have the popular communities that the PC games in the genre had.

That was all changed in Halo, in which players could fight aliens on foot and in vehicles, in order to complete objectives, while trying to unravel the secret of the Halo. Halo pioneered limiting the amount of weapons a player could carry to two, which in turn, meant forcing the player to make strategic decisions in order to complete his missions.

People waited for the Halo 3 release with baited breath. They awaited the continuation of the one-person, shoot-em-up combat format that had been prevalent in the previous two versions of Halo. Microsoft calls it the ‘Golden Triangle of Halo’, which consists of gun-type weapons, grenades and others. In actuality, this was nothing new to one-person, shoot-em-up games, as it had existed since the very first Doom and even the predecessor to that game, Wolfenstein.

So, with all of that previous history, people were full of anticipation about the Halo 3 release date. How popular and welcome was the game? Well, before its release, 3.1 million copies were sold in advance orders and retailers thought that that was insufficient.

The game grossed $300 million in the United States in just the first seven days. Overall, it has sold over nine million copies worldwide and was the best-selling video game in the United States in 2007. Even the critics liked it, putting it the seventh highest on the all-time list of Xbox 360 games.

The Halo 3 release date, like the release date of many widely popular video games was almost like a national holiday like Christmas or Easter. It leaves us with the question of just what will happen in the realm of video games in the near future?

Halo 3 Modification

A Halo 3 mod is generally thought of as any software modification that changes the game play in the super popular video game for the Xbox 360, Halo 3. But the term also encompasses many other modifications, such as physical changes made to the Xbox 360 console to show the world that you are a hard-core Halo fanatic.

However, before someone can make a Halo 3 mod, they need the proper tools, along with some technical expertise and knowledge. These tools would usually includes a number of pieces of software that allow people to de-construct, edit, and reconstruct Halo 3 files. It would also involve some hardware to allow the Xbox 360 hard drive to be read into a PC and the files to be restored to that hard drive.

You have to do this because the Xbox 360 is not a platform on which files can be altered. In the past, the hardware developers, in this case Microsoft, made the tools available to people who paid the licensing fee. But over time, especially in the case of Halo 3 mods, the public has developed a number of tools and techniques to accomplish what has to be done for modification.

A Halo 3 mod also includes, as written earlier, physical alterations to the Xbox 360 console itself. For example, some people might take off the case and actually carve the words ‘Halo 3′ into it. They might also accompany this by painting the console red, blue or green to match the colour of the armour of the heroes in the game.

However, it’s a rather extreme way to announce to the world – I like Halo 3 – in that it could cause actual damage that makes the Xbox 360 unplayable. It would also void the guarantee. People often display their altered Xbox 360s on photo-sharing sites such as Flickr and when they go toattend live LAN events.

One of the stipulations that people who are interested in the world of the Halo 3 mod try to insist on is that these should not be created for the purpose of cheating. Modifications are fun to get a new twist on Halo 3 play or a new feel for certain levels. But if they’re used to make the game unfair in favour of one person or team, they ruin the overall game experience for everyone.

One website where a person can find many a Halo 3 mod is H3mod.com. The site calls itself the ‘future of Halo modding’. It seems to be a good place to start if you really want to find out more about a Halo 3 mod.

Home Movie Theater: Screens

When it comes to choosing a screen, the first consideration is the type of screen you want or even may need. If the room where you are going to set up your home theater is a big one, then you will need to have a home theater projection screen or maybe you just want one anyway.

I, personally, like the idea of having a drop-down screen, but sometimes you have to have one even in a modest home theater. It converts your living room into a home theater: you recline in your chair; click a button and a screen drops down; click a button and the lights dim; click another one and the movie begins!

If you prefer a television screen, then you might consider buying a new one if you can afford it. They say that a 27 inch screen is adequate, but I do not agree. In my opinion, you really need 48-60 inches, but then I am a 50 something year old and my eyes are definitely not what they used to be.

If you are purchasing a new TV for your home movie theater, I think you should aim high. HDTV is already here and since February 2009 the USA is committed to High Definition. Therefore, I would make sure that your new television is capable of receiving it. Then I suggest that your new home movie theater screen be a flat one in order to reduce the annoying glare that could ruin your experience, which could be another reason for opting for a projection screen.

Finally, you should make sure that your new TV has enough input and output sockets for the peripheral equipment you plan to use and you’re done. Therefore, to summarize, I recommend you go for:

At least a 27 inch screen

A flat screen

HDTV compatibility

Plenty of input and output plugs

Satellite compatibility

I would definitely get a receiver which is already satellite enabled, because it is the future or even the near future. If you get a satellite TV connection you will have access to HDTV downloads which you can watch on your new home movie theater set-up whenever you like.
